The Unmatched Business Lesson From Vinod Gupta

Vinod Gupta is a giant in global entrepreneurship. The Everest Group manager made a name for himself at a younger age. He admits that his success came out of goodwill. According to Vinod Gupta, investing entails the long-term returns made from a particular investment. He notes that many fail because they think that investment involves pumping money to any profitable company.

Armed with a master’s degree in Business Administration, he made a debut for his working career at a prominent mobile company. His duties revolved around doing market and research analysis. The first task was to compile a list of mobile home dealers in the country. Vinod Gupta could not get the data online since there was no internet and therefore decided to make a list from scratch. The task was a revelation in his career because he became aware that he could do anything related to data analysis.

Additionally, he realized that the field of data analysis was not competitive. He started American Business Lists in 1972 and compiled lists from the Yellow Pages and databases across the US. Mobile home vendors became his first clients. He boosted his company at all costs both financially and employing experts in the field.

Vinod Gupta made history after investing $100 million as startup capital to a company that rose to a value of $680 million. In 2002 alone, the company that had rebranded to InfoUSA made sales worth $302 million. The profit was thrice the initial investment. Gupta sold the company after some years for $680 million.

Besides business, Vinod is a philanthropic person having assisted many in his home country India and beyond. Vinod has a heart for sharing financial, marketing, and educational resources. Thousands of people have benefited in his giving in one way or another.

In an article with Weekly Opinion entitled “Vinod Gupta Invests in Women’s Education”, Gupta share how he’s helped established the women’s polytechnic school to enable women to earn post-graduate degrees.  With karmic understanding, he has always understood the opportunities he was given, and has vowed to dedicate his resources to providing similar opportunities to others.
